VFX AND CGI The New Age of Cinema 📽️

From Georges Méliès' fantastical visions to James Cameron's breathtakingly realistic "Avatar,"
Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar"  the development of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects (VFX) in filmmaking is a fascinating tale of creativity and technological mastery. Let's take a historical tour to discover how these methods have impacted the film industry throughout history.

The Origin of CGI and the Rise of Visual Effects

At the end of the 19th century, creators like Georges Méliès amazed audiences with the real effects; thus, the first magical worlds of the cinema were created. With the coming of the digital age in the 1970s, CGI started to reconsider the possibilities of visual storytelling, and films like Westworld gave us the first taste of computer-generated imagery and thus prepared the way for the revolutionary changes that followed. The CGI Revolution: "Jurassic Park" and "The Last Starfighter" are the two science fiction films mentioned in this phase.

According to Chabanova, A. (2022). films like "The Last Starfighter" (1984) and "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) that stretched the bounds of what was conceivable on screen demonstrated the explosion of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the 1980s. Nevertheless, the history of visual effects saw a significant shift in the late 1980s and early 1990s. James Cameron's groundbreaking use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create stunning underwater scenes and realistic fluid simulations in "The Abyss" (1989) stunned viewers. However, "Terminator 2: "Judgement Day" (1991) was the film that truly revolutionized the use of computer graphics in cinema. Cameron showcased the ability of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to produce lifelike individuals and previously unseen landscapes by using figures like the liquid-metal T-1000.

Still, Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" (1993) is arguably the most well-known example of CGI development. The people were in awe of the realistic movements and behaviours of the dinosaurs that Spielberg and his team brought back to life using innovative technology. The film's masterful use of computer-generated imagery not only revolutionized the visual effects field but also changed how filmmakers were employed to create fantastical creatures on screen.
